Before you start: you need the store owner account, or a staff account with permission to manage Settings → Custom data. The one-time setup (Parts 1, 2 and 5) takes about 15 minutes.

Part 1 — Create the specification template

A metaobject is a template. You create it once, and every specification card is built from it.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Custom data.
  2. Under Metaobjects, click Add definition.
  3. In Name, type Product specification.
  4. Check the Type below the name. It must be exactly: product_specification
  5. Click Add field and create these five fields. The key of each field must match exactly.

  2. Set Display name to Title, so your entries are easy to find.
  3. ⚠️ Turn on storefront access. Under Access, set Storefronts to Read. If you skip this, everything looks correct in the admin, but no specifications ever show on your store. This is the most common setup mistake.
  4. Click Save.

✅ Result: you now have a Product specification template with five fields.

Part 2 — Connect specifications to products

A metafield adds a “Specifications” field to every product, so each product can pick its own cards.

  1. Go to Settings → Custom data → Products.
  2. Click Add definition.
  3. Click Add field and create these five fields. The key of each field must match exactly.

  2. Optional: click Pin so the field appears at the top of every product page in the admin.
  3. Click Save.

✅ Result: every product now has an empty Specifications field.

Part 3 — Create your specification entries

Each entry is one card. Create an entry once and reuse it on as many products as you like.

Real example: Aura Wireless Headphones

We want four cards for our headphones. Here is what we will enter:

Unique identifierTitleValueIconDescription
spec_battery_40hBatteryUp to 40 hoursline:lightningLong-lasting battery performance
spec_charging_usbcChargingUSB-C fast chargingglass:power10 minutes for 5 hours of playback
spec_wireless_bt53WirelessBluetooth 5.3glass:networkingStable connection up to 10 m
spec_audio_40mmAudio40 mm driversline:headphonesRich, balanced sound

Create the first entry, step by step

  1. Go to Content → Metaobjects → Product specification.
  2. Click Add entry.
  3. Fill in the fields:Unique identifier : spec_battery_40h Title : Battery Value : Up to 40 hours Icon : line:lightning Description : Long-lasting battery performance
  4. Make sure the status is Active. Draft entries are not shown on your store.
  5. Click Save.

Repeat these steps for Charging, Wireless and Audio using the table above.

✅ Result: four Active entries in Content → Metaobjects → Product specification.

Tips for filling in the fields

  • Unique identifier is for you only; customers never see it. Use lowercase letters, numbers and underscores, and give every entry a different identifier, for example spec_battery_40h and spec_battery_24h.
  • Title and Value are both required. A card with one of them missing is not shown.
  • Icon is optional. A card without an icon still looks complete.
  • Reuse entries. If ten products ship for free, create one spec_shipping_free entry and add it to all ten. Edit it once and all ten update.

Icon list

How to write an icon value

Every icon value has two parts, the style and the name, joined by a colon:

line:truck
glass:power
  • ✅ line:truck — correct
  • ❌ truck — missing the style, so no icon is shown
  • ❌ Line:Truck or line:smart-phone — use lowercase and underscores exactly as listed
  • ❌ glass:lightning — this name exists only as a Line icon

Line icons are simple outline icons that use the icon color you set in the section. Glass icons are colorful, layered illustrations that look best on a few showcase cards.

Troubleshooting

The section doesn’t show on my product page. Check these in order:

  1. Storefront access is turned on for the metaobject (Part 1, step 8).
  2. The product has specifications selected (Part 4).
  3. The entries are Active, not Draft.
  4. Each entry has both a Title and a Value.
  5. The type is exactly product_specification and the metafield is exactly custom.specifications.
  6. The section is added to the product template (Part 5).

Tip: open the product in the theme editor. If something is missing, the section shows a short message explaining what to fix. Only you can see it; customers never do.

One card is missing. That entry is missing its Title or Value, or the product has more cards than the Maximum cards setting allows.

A card has no icon. The Icon field is empty, or the value is misspelled. Compare it with the icon list, and remember the line: or glass: part.

I edited an entry and other products changed too. Entries are shared between products. To use different wording on one product, create a new entry with a different identifier and select it on that product instead.
